Caffeine is a bitter, white crystalline xanthine alkaloid that acts as a stimulant drug. Caffeine is found in varying quantities in the seeds, leaves, and fruit of some plants, where it acts as a natural pesticide that paralyzes and kills certain insects feeding on the plants. It is most commonly consumed by humans in infusions extracted from the seed of the coffee plant and the leaves of the tea bush, as well as from various foods and drinks containing products derived from the kola nut (Wikipedia, 2013).
Since the return from Melbourne (the so-called ‘coffee epicentre’ of Australia), I’ve decreased my intake of coffee, namely, barista-made coffee. Not to say there is no good coffee in Perth, but it tends to be geographically less convenient and slightly pricier.
This has resulted in turning to Singaporean Kopi-O Instant Coffee in the am and pm for my pick me up. I eventually got quite accustomed to this routine, and even started to enjoyed it.
Deborah♥ recently got me a Market Lane Jet Set Starter Kit. It consists of an Aeropress, filter papers, a Porlex hand grinder and a pocket scale. The Aeropress is a device that brews filtered coffee and sits somewhere in between a pourover and a french press. Without being too wanky, the Aeropress is great as draws some of the clarity from a pourover, along with the body of a french press.
My first Aeropress brew was using some beans from Yirgacheffe, fruits and berries! It had been so long since I’ve had freshly brewed coffee that even one cup kept me buzzing for quite a while. One cup was so much stronger than a cup of Gold Kili Kopi O. Today I got some beans from Elixir, a Brazilian Rainha, which was milder and more chocolatey.
The whole process takes around 5-7 minutes and the set up is quite portable. I’m looking forward to bringing this along on our travels for freshly brewed coffee in the morning!
